Lest We Forget
By Marti Murray
Dawn steals silently across this hallowed ground, The Wilderness, Antietam, Vicksburg, Bull Run,
And chills run down my spine; Even the place where I stood;
As I stand in reverence and gaze around, At battle’s end, as day was done
Imagining all the dreams left behind. Bodies lay mangled, covered in blood.
Row upon row of markers I see, We can only imagine the agony they felt,
Etched with names of those who died. As their life slipped slowly away.
They gave their all for Grant or Lee, They accepted the hand they each were dealt,
North or South; they chose their side. As they laid down their life that day.
They fought in battles far from home, Looking across this expanse of graves,
In places they had never been. Envisioning those brave men lying here;
Surrounded by others, yet all alone, I have only the greatest praise,
In their quest to fight and defend. For their courage in the face of great fear.
Young or old, it mattered not, Each time when “Dixie” is playing,
No favorites in this deadly game; I’ll stand and wipe the tears from my eye.
Chests bloomed red after each shot, As I remember those who are laying,
As death made its final claim. Under the sod, ‘neath this Gettysburg sky

Alice was dressed in a beautiful dark purple period dress as she described the Battle of Franklin, TN and Carnton Plantation. She also described the officers who were shot, including our Chapter’s namesake Major General Patrick R. Cleburne. In her descriptions, based on a novel in hand, she told how many times they were shot and what location on the body the bullet penetrated and that some were only in socks since their boots had been stolen.

UDC member Jo Grover presented a program on “A History of the First Settlers of Cleburne County”, our Chapter’s namesake. Not only the history was discussed, but she told of different communities and the families who lived there; some of the descendants were present at the meeting. One of the notable locations she talked about was the Howle & Turner Store on Highway 9. The store had something for everyone: feed, fertilizer, seeds for crops, hardware, utensils, fabric, food and probably toys. It was a Walmart, before it’s time and served communities for miles.

A YOUNG WIFE’S PRAYER
I rest my head on my pillow each night Keeping body and soul together And tears flood down my cheeks Becomes harder with each passing day As I try with all my might As round the lists of dead we gather To erase the last few weeks And try to keep fear at bay The South issued a call to arms I hear the screams as a name is found Our nation was headed to war Among those lost this week So men from neighboring farms I search the list as my heart pounds Poured out of every door And tears flow down my cheek They mounted their horses, loaded their guns His name’s not there, I can breathe again They left wives and families behind At least for a few more days As the thrill of the hunt beckoned So amidst the sounds of other’s pain We all prayed for peace of mind I utter a prayer of praise I watched as my beloved rode away God give us strength to see this through While my heart was breaking in two As day by day we struggle to go on But I knew that come what may Praise and adoration we pledge to You My God would see me through And plead You send our loved ones home The sands of time are shifting on Through the hardships and pain You are here As each day gets harder to bear You give us the will to survive I feel so weary, worn and alone So thank you Lord for calming our fear Living in a waking nightmare And for keeping our hope alive. Our National Treasure
The old grey coat was tucked way down deep, He shared stories of the brave man who fought,
It was dirty and ragged and torn. For everything they held dear;
She wondered why her Grandfather had chosen to keep, For the way of life they sought,
Something this old and so worn. And the constant nagging fear.
With gentle hands she lifted her find, Her Great Grandmother's letters were of hope and pride;
Surprised that it weighted so much, Wishing that soon this terrible war would end,
Until she discovered the treasure inside. So that her husband could return to her side;
Carefully, almost afraid to touch; Never to be parted from her again.
She lifted stacks of letters so yellowed and old, But fate had other plans in store,
Written on scraps of paper worn thin, Her Great Grandmother's heart would be broken in two,
But, oh, the story these letters told, For her husband would never return from the war;
Of many courageous Confederate men. Or to the son he hardly knew.
Her grandfather’s dad had left his wife and new son, The letters were kept in the coat of the tattered his Dad wore.
And with head held high had marched away, To remind her grandfather of the sacrifices made,
To join Generals Lee and Forrest and Johnston, Of the terrible pain his Mother bore,
On that glorious Southern day. And the ultimate price his Dad had paid.
His letters began with how much he missed them, These letters remind us all to protect the past,
How love for them both filled his heart. And to honor the sacrifices made beyond measure.
He told of precious memories within him, In doing so, we will forge a nation that will last,
And that only this war could keep them apart. With a rich history that is our National Treasure.
But soon he spoke of his loneliness,
And the terrible loss and pain; By Marti Murray [email protected]
He told of battles fought with little rest,
And of constant hunger and cold and rain.

Southern Pride
Smoke from a thousand campfires This land called “Dixie” that they defended
Wafted into the nighttime sky, Had claimed their very soul,
As weary men prepared to get some rest So they continued into each battle
While they kept a watchful eye. With victory as their final goal.
There was no comfort to be found But alas, they could not overcome
As the fires continued to burn, The crippling shortage of needed supplies,
And lying on the cold hard ground So hungry, barefoot and bleeding
They rolled and twisted and turned. They surrendered their broken lives.
For they knew that with the light of day At Appomattox, when they laid down their arms The fighting would begin anew; Their pride took a mighty blow,
And the bloodbath would start over But with heads held high they marched away With the coming of the dew. In a ragtag Southern flow.
Each man was weary and worn Defeat was but a word to them
Without an end in sight, As they labored to rebuild their lives.
This horrible War Between the States From the ashes a new South was born;
Dragged on both day and night. And pride in the South survives!!!
In the darkness peace eluded them Written by:
And worry creased each brow, Martha Pullen Murray
As they tried to picture a loved one’s face
“I’ll make it home”, they vowed.
Martha won first place for her poem on National Treasure at the Alabama Division and then at the 2018 General Convention she won the Father Abram Joseph Ryan Poetry Contest – with Southern Pride
